Eliza didn’t know it until later – she didn’t learn French until well into high school – but those letters written in French were bordering poetic, the letter letters more so – she didn’t want to say romantic, yet they were, for she was afraid that that’s all she would hope they would be: romantic, poetic, scriptures written for her, and Eliza knew that wasn’t the case – and maybe Adrienne did that on purpose, maybe she didn’t even mean it, but Eliza didn’t know.
(She still doesn’t.)
But across the back of one of the letters are scrawled the words: D'avoir son est d'avoir les étoiles.
(To have her is to have the stars.)
And, for a moment, Eliza lets herself believe it.
